Sustainability Initiatives
ORIX Aquarium Corporation promotes the realization of a sustainable future society through various initiatives.
ORIX Aquarium's corporate mission is to focus on the local communities where each of its aquariums are rooted and to discover a better future together with the people living there.
Through our aquariums, we communicate the ecology and behaviors of creatures, inspire interest in nature, and provide opportunities for people to think about the coexistence of humans and aquatic environments in their daily lives.
We also promote sustainable initiatives aimed at creating a global environment in which humans and nature can coexist and thrive, ensuring comfort for all people, and living together in harmony with local communities.
Reducing CO2 through energy efficiency and conservation

Artificial seawater
By using an artificial seawater production system, we reduce CO2 emissions caused by transporting seawater by large vehicles, which has been a challenge for inland aquariums, and maintain consistent water quality throughout the year.
LED lighting
We use LED lighting for exhibit tanks to reduce energy consumption. We design our lighting with consideration for the biology of the creatures while reducing environmental impact.
Energy optimization
We have introduced a central monitoring system (Building Energy Management System: BEMS) for all equipment to optimize energy consumption. KYOTO AQUARIUM also utilizes renewable energy sources such as solar power generation and rainwater reuse.
Operation with 100% renewable energy sourced electricity
KYOTO AQUARIUM procures electricity with non-fossil certificates with tracking, ensuring that 100% of the electricity used within the facility is effectively derived from renewable energy sources.
Procured from Kansai Electric Power since October 2022. Electricity with non-fossil certificate that certifies the "non-fossil value (environmental value)" of power generated from non-fossil power sources such as renewable energy, with attribute information (tracking information) such as the power plant location attached.
Contributing to the creation of a global environment that enables coexistence with nature

Reducing plastic waste
In the aquarium's café, we primarily use paper straws to reduce environmental impact (plastic straws are used for some menu items). We are also gradually adopting environmentally friendly materials, such as switching to paper bags in the shops and introducing paper cups in the cafés.
Reducing food waste
We strive to reduce food waste at the aquarium cafés through efficient ingredient procurement and cooking methods.
Providing comfortable, safe, and secure services

Universal design
We provide universal design that allows all visitors to enjoy our aquariums with comfort and security, such as barrier-free exhibition viewing routes and guidance signs using pictograms.
Disaster preparedness
We have developed our own disaster preparedness manual, and regularly conduct emergency drills to confirm evacuation guidance methods. Additionally, KYOTO AQUARIUM maintains emergency supplies such as drinking water withing the facility in preparation for potential disasters.
Contributing to the development of local communities through coexistence with nature

Animal care and conservation activities
We provide opportunities for people to foster their interest in living creatures and their understanding of local nature by caring for animals in environments and using methods that prioritize animal welfare, and by engaging in conservation activities such as "species conservation" and "education and awareness."
AQTION!
AQTION! is an initiative to address issues identified through the perspective of the aquarium, taking approaches unique to the aquarium to build the future together with children. Since it's an ACTION that starts from the AQUARIUM, we call it "AQTION!" We offer a variety of programs designed to provide people with opportunities to reflect on the global environment and the value of life by experiencing creatures in the aquarium up close.
Coexistence with the local community
To create facilities rooted in the local community, we actively participate in community activities promoted by local governments.
